The Day School Judaics Program stresses a hands-on, interactive, experiential approach to learning about Judaics. Programs are developed sequentially through concepts, skills, and their application. Students utilize research skills, analytical skills and reasoning skills. In addition, the use of print and non-print materials reinforce in class learning. Topics are assigned for each grade level. Whenever applicable, Judaics is integrated into all areas of learning, in all grade levels, throughout the year. Integration efforts are reflected in each subject area curriculum guide, in addition to the Judaics Curriculum Guide.
Grade 6
We continue to study Torah in the original Hebrew texts. They learn to chant Torah portions using Trope. They continue to develop, express and respect their Jewish identity and their relationship to God. Sixth grade students apply moral and ethical Jewish values to day-to-day issues on a personal and community level. ThroughTorah study with the teachers, as well as integration with areas of the secular curriculum., sixth graders learn to identify their roles as members of the world and Jewish communities. Sixth grade students become comfortable assuming leadership roles in worship services, and learn not only necessary prayers, but appropriate procedures for various occasions. They study Jewish history begining with the story Abraham and the begining of monotheism. THey learn that Jewish History is relevant as well as their history. They see Judaism as a vibrant and important part of their lives, not simply as "ancient history."
Grade 7 & 8
Through Torah Torah study with the clergy and teachers, as well as integration with areas of the secular curriculum., seventh and eighth graders continue to identify their roles as members of the world and Jewish communities. Students are comfortable assuming leadership roles in worship services and holiday programing and know not only necessary prayers, but appropriate procedures for various occasions.
